George Elbert Burr, born Monroe Falls, - Near Roche, Vaud - 1899 - T-Shirt

A quiet pencil landscape of a shaded grove, two haystacks and distant farm buildings set in an open meadow between mountain slopes.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built from off-white paper and graphite greys, with the paper left bright across most of the sheet. A dense cluster of bare and leafy trees sits left of centre, its branches drawn in dark, varied strokes that give the grove its weight. Against it, the meadow stays pale and open, with light marks suggesting grass and uneven ground. Two small conical haystacks rest on the grass to the right of the trees, and a few low buildings appear in the middle distance. Mountain slopes frame the scene on either side. The inscription near Roche, Vaud, with its 1899 date, runs along the lower left edge.

Meaning & Symbolism

Roche lies in the canton of Vaud in western Switzerland, where the lower Alps descend toward the lakes and river valleys. The scene records working countryside at the foot of the mountains, where hay was gathered and fields were kept close to the villages. The contrast between the shaded trees and the bright meadow suggests shelter and a seasonal routine, while the mountains behind place the farm within a much larger natural setting. George Elbert Burr, an American artist born in Monroe Falls, Ohio, travelled and sketched extensively in Europe. This sheet is one of his direct studies made on location, and its tonal modelling and dated inscription show the working method he used to gather material for later, more finished compositions.

Made for the Wearer

This is a drawing meant to be read at close range, and a tee puts it exactly there, across the chest where the eye settles. The grove sits in the upper body and the open meadow carries down toward the hem, so the composition reads as a full scene as you move. Its pencil tones are soft and layered, making it a study you notice a little more with each look.
