Giuseppe Barberi, Italian, 1746–1809 - Sketches for a Gateway for a Prison Erected by Pope Pius VI - ca. 1790 - T-Shirt

This is a pen and brown ink wash study of a monumental prison gateway, drawn by the Italian architect Giuseppe Barberi around 1790 for a structure raised under Pope Pius VI.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built around a central pedimented gate flanked by domed pavilions, with an arched opening beneath a stone entablature. A statue sits atop a pedestal above the pediment, and a partial sketch of a doorway or frame hints at the drafting process behind the main elevation. The palette stays within warm sepia and dark ink brown washes on parchment beige, with cream highlights that lift the paper. The inscription PIVS VI PM FELICITA runs across the entablature, anchoring the composition in its papal patronage.

Meaning & Symbolism

Barberi's sketches treat the gateway as a statement of authority. In late eighteenth-century papal architecture, a prison entrance was meant to project control and deterrence, so the classical pediment, the domed turrets and the inscribed name of Pius VI together turned a utilitarian threshold into a visible sign of law and ecclesiastical government. The drawing also records how a架 Roman-era architect of the papal states worked: testing proportions and ornament on paper before any stone was cut.

Drawn for the Page, Read at Arm's Length

A drawing of this scale rewards close attention, with the ruled lines of the pediment and the soft wash of the domes reading best when the eye can move across each part of the sheet. On this tee, the artwork is printed across the chest, where the architectural layout can be taken in at a glance and the finer details of Barberi's hand come into view as you look closer.
