Jacques Reich, 10 Aug 1852 - 8 Jul 1923 - John Burgoyne - c. 1899-1920 - T-Shirt

A bust-length pen-and-ink portrait of John Burgoyne in a wide tricorn hat, rendered in fine, directional hatching on a cream sheet.

Visual Elements & Composition

Cream paper dominates the composition, with ink black carrying most of the drawing and warm grey softening the shadows. The sitter fills the frame from the shoulders up: the tricorn brim sweeps up at the sides, a looped ribbon sits on the crown, and curled hair shows at the temples. His face turns toward the viewer with heavy-lidded eyes and a closed mouth. A high cravat rises under a coat with turned-back lapels and a single visible button. The artist's signature, Jacques Reich, sits in the lower right.

Meaning & Symbolism

Burgoyne was a British army officer and playwright, known to his contemporaries as Gentleman Johnny. In 1777 he led an invasion from Canada meant to split New England from the other colonies. After his defeat at Saratoga he surrendered his army, and that loss is widely cited as a turning point in the American War of Independence, because it persuaded France to enter the war on the American side. The portrait stands for that campaign and for the alliance that decided the conflict. Reich's drawing dates to c. 1899 to 1920, when Revolutionary-era military dress was a favourite subject in illustrated histories, and the controlled, even pen work reflects that tradition.

Made for the Wearer

This drawing works well on a tee because its line work is crisp and self-contained. The tricorn and ribbon read clearly from across a room, and the reserved expression holds its character whether you wear it close to the chest or let it sit on your shoulders. Each shirt carries the portrait as a single, complete image, so the design remains legible wherever you are.
