Jacques Reich, 10 Aug 1852 - 8 Jul 1923 - John Winthrop - c. 1899-1920 - T-Shirt

This pen-and-ink bust shows Governor John Winthrop, the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, with a steady, direct gaze.

Visual Elements & Composition

The portrait is built from cream paper, grey shading and near-black ink. Winthrop's face is turned slightly toward the viewer's left, and his dark hair falls in soft waves to his shoulders around a high forehead and a full, trimmed beard. A deep, pleated lace ruff circles his neck and forms the brightest passage in the drawing. Below it, a dark garment is built from dense, downward strokes. Light hatching surrounds the head and collar, while the rest of the background stays open. The artist's signature sits beneath the chin, and the caption "Gov. John Winthrop." is inscribed on the mount below.

Meaning & Symbolism

In 1630, aboard the ship Arbella, Winthrop delivered a sermon called A Model of Christian Charity, in which he described the colony as a city upon a hill, a community whose conduct others would watch. That phrase became one of the most quoted images of the Puritan settlement and has been invoked in American political speech for centuries. Jacques Reich signed the drawing, and the catalogue dates it to c. 1899 to 1920, when portraits of colonial leaders were reproduced in histories of the Puritan settlement. Winthrop's likeness therefore carries the founding ideals of New England as well as the record of one governor.

Why It Suits This Tee

A tee presents its front as one broad, open field, and this portrait is composed to fill that field from the centre outward. Winthrop's bust sits at the middle of the chest, with the lace ruff drawing the eye just below the neckline. The hatching reads clearly at a distance and rewards a closer look, so the fine line work stays visible as you move through the day.
