Jacques Reich, 10 Aug 1852 - 8 Jul 1923 - John Quincy Adams - c. 1899-1920 - T-Shirt

A pen-and-ink bust of John Quincy Adams, drawn with a heavy brow, receding hair and a loose white cravat, signed by Jacques Reich.

Visual Elements & Composition

The figure fills a vertical field, turned toward the viewer's right with his eyes level and his mouth set in a slight, guarded line. Ink black dominates the drawing, mostly in the deeply shaded brow and the dark coat with its notched lapel. The white cravat is the lightest note, folded loosely beneath the chin. Fine diagonal hatching sweeps across the background and along the shoulders, growing lighter toward the edges of the cream sheet. Reich's signature runs along the lower left of the figure.

Meaning & Symbolism

Adams served as the sixth president of the United States from 1825 to 1829, and he was the son of John Adams, the second president. Before and after his time in the White House he worked as a diplomat, negotiating the Treaty of Ghent that ended the War of 1812, and he helped shape the Monroe Doctrine. As a member of the House of Representatives he became a persistent opponent of the gag rule on antislavery petitions and a defender of the captives in the Amistad case before the Supreme Court. The portrait reflects a long public career that linked the early republic to the slavery controversy that followed. The catalogue dates the original work to c. 1899 to 1920, when portrait series of presidents and their families filled illustrated volumes and periodicals, and the sure, economical lines suit that printed tradition.

Wearing the Portrait

A bust portrait reads best at chest height, where the eye settles on the face and the hatching carries the shoulders outward. The drawing's cream and ink palette and its restrained, reserved mood give the print a quiet presence on a plain tee, letting the linework and Adams's steady expression stay in focus as you move through the day.
