Jacques Reich, 10 Aug 1852 - 8 Jul 1923 - Samuel De Champlain - c. 1899-1920 - T-Shirt

A crosshatched pen-and-ink portrait of Samuel de Champlain, drawn in the illustrator's fine line and set in a 17th-century falling collar and tasselled doublet.

Visual Elements & Composition

The figure fills a vertical frame, shown bust-length and looking directly out of the picture. Cream dominates the ground, with charcoal black carrying the doublet, hair and beard. Loose hatching fades softly toward the edges, creating a vignette around the head. The broad white falling collar sits at the centre of the composition, and a pair of cords with tasselled ends hangs from the chest. Short strokes shade the cheeks and brow, while the signature Jacques Reich appears in the lower left.

Meaning & Symbolism

Samuel de Champlain (c. 1574 to 1635) was a French explorer, cartographer and colonial administrator, widely regarded as the founder of Quebec City in 1608. He mapped the Atlantic coast and the St Lawrence and Great Lakes region, and he built trading and missionary relations with Indigenous nations. The portrait presents him as a gentleman of learning and command, dressed in the courtly style of the early seventeenth century rather than as a frontier figure. Jacques Reich (1852 to 1923) belonged to the late nineteenth and early twentieth century tradition of illustrators who reproduced historical figures for books, periodicals and print.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

Worn on the chest, this portrait sits at the same height as the collar and cords it depicts, so the falling collar and tasselled doublet frame the wearer's own neckline. The hatching reads best up close, where the crossed lines of the doublet and the shaded face come into view as the shirt is seen across a room and then in conversation.
