James Barton Longacre, 11 Aug 1794 - 1 - George Rogers Clark - c. 1830 - T-Shirt

A half-length watercolour portrait of George Rogers Clark, shown in a dark blue military coat with gold epaulettes, one hand resting on a map.

Visual Elements & Composition

Navy blue dominates the design, set against buff tones in the waistcoat and a warm, muted dark brown ground. Gold appears in the epaulettes and the sword guard, with small touches of crimson in the red lining of the cloak. The sitter stands at a table covered in green, his hand resting on a sheet of paper. A white frill shows at the throat above a dark stock, and the figure fills the rectangular vignette, with his level gaze and composed mouth placed at the centre of the frame.

Meaning & Symbolism

The uniform, the sword and the map work together to present the sitter as a commander and a planner. George Rogers Clark (1752-1818) was a Virginia frontiersman and officer who led a small force into the Illinois country during the American Revolution, taking the British posts at Kaskaskia and Vincennes in 1778 and 1779. His campaigns secured the region for the American cause and are remembered as a bold feat of frontier warfare. James Barton Longacre (1794-1869), the artist, was an American engraver and draughtsman best known for engraved portraits and his long service as Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee carries its image across the chest, so the portrait sits at eye level for anyone facing the wearer. The figure's direct gaze meets the viewer head on, and the map under his hand becomes the focal point of the composition. The vignette's rectangular edge frames the figure much as a formal portrait hangs in a room, which suits a design built around a single standing figure and a single, deliberate gesture.
