James Barton Longacre, 11 Aug 1794 - 1 - Nicholas Biddle - c. 1830 - T-Shirt

A half-length portrait of Nicholas Biddle, drawn in coloured chalk, shows a composed man turning his head away from the viewer.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sitter's dark double-breasted coat and high black stock anchor the lower half of the image, while his fair face and softly curled hair stand out against the background. A rose-coloured drape is swagged across the upper field, with a cord and tassel falling at the right. On the left, a classical urn with relief decoration rests on a carved pedestal. His right hand lies on a table at the bottom edge, giving the figure a steady base. Pinks and browns warm the drapery, and soft greys shade the coat, so the palette balances warm and cool tones.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drape, urn and formal interior were standard conventions of early American portraiture, signalling education, refinement and public standing. The turned head and pensive gaze present Biddle as a man of affairs, and the hand on the table reinforces that he is a working professional. Biddle (1786-1844) was a Philadelphia financier and scholar who served as president of the Second Bank of the United States. His conflict with President Andrew Jackson over the bank became one of the defining political disputes of the 1830s. The portrait was made by James Barton Longacre (1794-1869), an American engraver, around 1830.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A half-length portrait suits the front of a tee, where the figure's shoulders and head sit across the chest and the composed gaze meets anyone looking at the wearer. The urn and drape frame the upper body the way the formal setting frames the sitter, so the image reads as a complete scene rather than a detail. The black coat and stock carry the strongest contrast, and the cream paper tone of the drawing stands out clearly on the shirt.
