James Barton Longacre, 11 Aug 1794 - 1 - James Wilson - c. 1825 - T-Shirt

A bust-length portrait of an older man in round wire spectacles, drawn in soft brown chalk and looking straight out of the frame with a calm, reserved expression.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sitter fills the vertical frame, turned slightly to one side. His white hair is swept back from the forehead, and a dark brown coat with large buttons sits beneath a white frilled jabot at the throat. The palette is restrained: sepia brown, dark umber, cream paper and off-white highlights on the hair and cravat. The background is a graded brown ground that darkens toward the lower corners, which pulls the eye up to the face. A double ruled border in slate blue-grey encloses the sheet, drawn as its own element around the image.

Meaning & Symbolism

The spectacles and plain, dark dress give the sitter a sober, professional bearing, in keeping with a man of standing in the late eighteenth-century American republic. The sitter is James Wilson (1742-1798), a Scottish-born lawyer and political theorist who signed the United States Constitution and went on to serve as a justice of the Supreme Court. The drawing is catalogued under the name of James Barton Longacre (1794-1869), an American engraver who later served as Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. The date in the record, c. 1825, places the work in the years Longacre was building his reputation as a portraitist.

Made for Everyday Wear

This is a study of a face, and a tee gives it room to be seen at close range. When someone wears it, the drawing moves with the body, so the direct gaze meets whoever is in conversation. The brown tones read as quiet against any everyday outfit, and the blue-grey border frames the chest the same way it frames the sheet.
