James Barton Longacre, 11 Aug 1794 - 1 - George Wythe - c. 1825 v1 - T-Shirt

A grey-toned profile portrait of George Wythe, drawn facing right with a bald crown and a tied queue of hair at the nape.

Visual Elements & Composition

The figure sits in strict profile against a dark rectangular ground, so the outline of the head does most of the work. Soft grey and charcoal tones dominate, worked in fine graphite-like strokes on a cream sheet. The modelling is even and unhurried, with a long, straight nose, a deep-set eye and a thin mouth that holds a faint, wry turn. Below the chin, a buttoned coat with a high collar gives way to a column of small waistcoat buttons, and a narrow white neckcloth shows at the throat.

Meaning & Symbolism

Profile was the traditional format for public likenesses of the period, chosen to emphasise the line of the head and a sense of intellect and firmness. The sober dress and plain background suit the sitter. George Wythe (1726-1806) was a Virginia jurist who signed the Declaration of Independence and taught law at the College of William and Mary, where his students included Thomas Jefferson and John Marshall. His reputation rested on learning and principle rather than military or political display, so the drawing presents him as a figure of scholarship and public integrity. The portrait was made by James Barton Longacre (1794-1869), an American engraver and draughtsman best known for engraved portraits and for his long service as Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint.

Crafted for the Wearer

A profile portrait reads best at close range, when the eye follows the contour from brow to collar. On a tee, the image sits where the wearer can see it clearly, with the figure's outline and buttoned coat in view. The restrained palette of grey, cream and charcoal keeps the focus on the drawing itself, the same quiet quality that defines the original sheet.
