James Barton Longacre, 11 Aug 1794 - 1 - George Wythe - c. 1825 v2 - T-Shirt

A small grey profile of George Wythe, the Virginia jurist, sits on a tall cream sheet with a handwritten caption that names him.

Visual Elements & Composition

The design is built around a single figure in strict profile, facing right. The vignette is shaded in soft grey against a plain dark ground and placed in the upper centre of the sheet. Cream paper fills most of the composition, leaving the margins open. The only lettering is a handwritten caption in the lower margin, with the sitter's name in script and a line naming the draughtsman. The head is largely bald with pale hair above the ear and a tied queue at the nape. A buttoned coat over a waistcoat with a column of small buttons completes the figure.

Meaning & Symbolism

Framing a profile within a vignette on a larger sheet was a common way to prepare a likeness for reproduction, and this sheet presents Wythe in exactly that form. George Wythe (1726-1806) signed the Declaration of Independence and taught law at the College of William and Mary, where he taught Thomas Jefferson and John Marshall. His reputation rested on learning and principle, and the plain dress and restrained profile reflect that. James Barton Longacre (1794-1869), an American engraver and draughtsman, is best known for engraved portraits and for his long service as Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint. This drawing is one of several versions of the same profile, made in the late 18th-century tradition of printed reference portraiture.

Designed for the Tee

A profile this compact reads best at chest height, where the eye settles on the figure and the caption area stays in view as a quiet detail. The restrained grey tones and open cream field suit a shirt worn in everyday settings, and the portrait keeps its scholarly, measured character on the front of the garment.
