Leonardo Scaglia, Italian, 1640 – 1650 - Drawing - unknown - T-Shirt

A pen and grey wash study of a horizontal frieze of interlocking acanthus scrolls, shaded to read as carved relief.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing runs as a long, horizontal band set against a field of fine parallel hatching. Two large spiralling scrolls sit side by side, each with a coiled centre and a curling outer stem. A smaller scroll and a pendant bud link them at the middle, and a cluster of rounded forms rests below. At the right, a tall acanthus spray rises in layered, serrated leaves. Grey wash models the foliage, with controlled contrast between lit leaf surfaces and their shadowed undersides, so the leaves gain a convex, sculptural presence. The palette is restrained: pale paper, grey wash and ink black, with a warm sepia stain along one margin.

Meaning & Symbolism

The acanthus is a classical motif, drawn from the leaf of the acanthus plant and used across Roman and later architectural ornament to fill friezes, cornices and panels. Its continuous, rhythmic curl conveys growth and abundance. The repeated spirals of this band reflect the decorative logic of a frieze meant to run unbroken along a wall or entablature, while the flat hatched ground behind the leaves sets them forward as if standing in relief. Studies like this were used as patterns by sculptors and stuccoists, and they show the classicising taste of Italian ornament in the seventeenth century. The sheet is catalogued under the name Leonardo Scaglia, Italian, with a date range of 1640 to 1650.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A frieze is built to be read in sequence, and a tee is worn the same way: the scrolls travel across the chest and the acanthus spray gives the eye a single vertical to follow as the wearer moves. The drawing's shading, which turns flat ink into carved volume, reads clearly at close range, so the leaf modelling stays legible when the shirt is worn up close in conversation.
