Unknown, Italian - Design of an Altar mensa - 1650-1675 - T-Shirt

This pen and grey wash drawing presents the frontal panel of an altar table, with two putti framing an oval medallion at its centre.

Visual Elements & Composition

The design is built on a grey-green wash that dominates the sheet, with pale blue-grey mat tones and olive grey shading giving the carved forms their depth. Cream white highlights lift the raised surfaces, so the relief reads clearly from a distance. A horizontal panel is divided into a central field and narrow vertical pilasters, each carrying scrolled foliage and rosettes. A large oval cartouche holds a smaller medallion with a standing, robed figure beneath a drapery swag and a mask. Two naked putti lean in from either side, one holding a flowering branch and the other reaching toward the medallion with a sprig of leaves. Acanthus scrolls spill toward the lower corners, and a shell motif sits at the base beneath a small cartouche.

Meaning & Symbolism

The composition joins devotional imagery with decorative ornament. The central medallion holds the eye on a sacred figure, while the putti, branches and garlands add a note of celebration and renewal around it. Scrolls, rosettes and shells belong to the ornamental language of church furnishings, where such motifs framed the most important image on the altar and drew attention to it during the liturgy. The drawing is catalogued as Italian and dated 1650 to 1675, and its finished wash and white heightening show a design made for approval or for carving in wood or stone.

Wearing the Design on a Tee

Altar ornament was designed to be read at a distance, and this artwork works the same way on a crew-neck tee. The medallion sits at the centre of the chest, with the putti and scrolls spreading outward to the edges, so the composition is seen as a whole rather than in pieces. The grey-green palette gives the design a quiet, muted presence that suits everyday wear.
