Louise Cox, American, 1865 - 1945 - Untitled (Seated Draped Female Allegorical Figure) - ca. 1903 - T-Shirt

A seated woman in a flowing gown holds an open book beside a carved stone pedestal, drawn in graphite on cream paper.

Visual Elements & Composition

Parchment beige fills most of the sheet, with graphite grey carrying the drapery and shadow and touches of rust brown. The figure's long, loose gown spreads across her lap and onto the ground in layered, softly shaded folds. A broad open book rests across her knees, and one arm lies along the top of the pedestal at right. A balustrade with a turned baluster marks the left edge, and a faint grid of ruled lines runs across the whole sheet.

Meaning & Symbolism

The seated pose, the open book and the downward gaze mark the figure as one of contemplation and learning, a theme that allegorical figures of study and wisdom carried in European and American decorative and mural painting. The pedestal and balustrade set her in an architectural space that lends the scene formal, ceremonial dignity. The title identifies her as a personification rather than a portrait. Louise Cox (American, 1865–1945) made the drawing, dated ca. 1903, and the ruled grid shows it was prepared for transfer to a larger work, a working method of figure painters of the period.

Calm Detail, Worn Close

A tee sits against the body and is seen at conversation distance, so the fine graphite shading and the quiet downward gaze read as intimate rather than monumental. The composition's restraint suits a shirt worn every day: the figure holds still while the fabric moves with you. The grid lines, the open book and the pedestal give the front of the shirt a clear structure, so the drawing reads as a study worth looking at twice.
