Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built on pale, lightly toned paper, with the figure set low and the drapery filling most of the lower half of the sheet. Soft graphite tones model the cloth, and lighter highlights left bare on the paper give the folds their volume. One hand rests in the lap while the other lifts a fold of fabric, and the wide neckline and full, gathered sleeves frame a calm, simple silhouette. The head is the only sharply defined edge, with the gaze directed forward and slightly downward.

Meaning & Symbolism

The turned head, the plain band in the hair and the quiet posture point to a figure of classical or allegorical character rather than a portrait of an individual. Profile views of seated women were a recurring device in nineteenth-century figure painting and decorative schemes, where the pose conveyed composure and inward attention. The drapery carries much of the sense of stillness and dignity.
