Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Bridge Azzani - unknown - T-Shirt

A watercolour sketch of a multi-arched stone bridge crossing a shallow river, with figures on the banks and a walled settlement rising on a distant hill.

Visual Elements & Composition

Soft cream dominates the sheet, washed through with sepia brown, ochre, pale sky blue and muted sage green. The bridge runs left to right across the picture, its pointed arches standing in the water and a single figure at the crown of the deck. A second arcade recedes toward the far bank, and rounded towers crown a hill under a pale sky. Trees line the left bank, low-roofed buildings sit at right, and two long-robed figures stand in the foreground beside fallen blocks of stone. A partly legible handwritten caption runs along the lower edge.

Meaning & Symbolism

The bridge carries a road over water, and its masonry is visibly weathering, with stone lying on the bank. The figures and scattered blocks give the scene a sense of everyday passage and of older construction slowly giving way. The repeated arches and distant citadel tie the crossing to a wider landscape of routes and towns. Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born in Manlius, New York, worked in watercolour and pencil during his travels in Egypt and the Near East, and this sheet reflects his interest in architecture set within its surroundings. It comes from the sketchbook record of those journeys, the place where he gathered the studies that larger compositions later drew on.

On the T-Shirt

Printed across the chest, the bridge spans the wide front panel the way it spans its river, with the arches running across the body and the far hill rising toward the shoulders. The soft cream ground reads as a quiet backdrop for the sepia and sage tones, so the scene stays easy to take in at a glance and at conversation distance. Each wearer carries a little of the sketchbook's sense of travel and old stone out into the everyday.
