Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Egyptian Temple - unknown - T-Shirt

A pencil study of a long passage through an Egyptian temple, where massive columns march toward a ruined far end and a single robed figure stands at their foot.

Visual Elements & Composition

The view is built on one-point perspective. Flared, bell-shaped capitals line the left side in a receding row, their drums shaded in soft graphite to show weight and curve. The right side is closed by a tall pier and wall, and a horizontal architrave runs across the top of the scene like a lid over the passage. Fine, light grey outlines carry the drawing across a buff parchment ground, so the stone reads as pale and sunlit. The eye is pulled down the aisle to broken masonry and fallen blocks at the end.

Meaning & Symbolism

The robed figure beside the column sets a human measure against the monumental stone, and that contrast is the heart of the piece. Rows of columns define the route through sacred space, so the drawing is as much about passage and order as about architecture. The fallen blocks at the far end suggest the long span of centuries since the temple was in use. Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, an American painter and draughtsman born in Manlius, New York, worked in Europe and travelled to the Near East, and drew subjects like this on location. Views of this kind formed part of the nineteenth-century Western visual record of Egypt's antiquities.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tall, narrow composition like this runs vertically, so it suits a tee worn upright on the body, where the columns can rise with the figure's posture. The soft buff tone and fine line work sit calmly against the shirt, letting the architecture carry the eye across the chest and down toward the ruined end of the passage.
