Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Temple at Thebes, Egypt - unknown - T-Shirt

A graphite study of weathered temple masonry at Thebes, Egypt, drawn by nineteenth-century American artist Miner Kilbourne Kellogg and titled in pencil at the lower right.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built from fallen and piled stone rather than a complete façade. Squared blocks stack toward the upper right, a broad column drum sits near the centre, and a tilted slab with carved detail rises at the left. Hatched pencil lines define each stone course and a diagonal mass in the foreground, giving the masonry weight and texture. The upper portion of the sheet is left nearly blank, toned a warm pale parchment, so the stonework anchors the lower two-thirds. The only lettering is the word Thebes inscribed in the corner.

Meaning & Symbolism

Thebes stood among the great capitals of ancient Egypt, and its temple complexes at Karnak and Luxor drew travellers throughout the 1800s. Kellogg chose fragments over a whole building, and that choice conveys ruin and the sheer scale of what survives. Views like this presented the temple as evidence of a vanished civilisation whose architecture still dominated the landscape, which suited a European and American audience fascinated by antiquity. The drawing also reflects how such studies were made: on site as source material, later worked up into finished paintings in the studio.

Wear the Ruins

A drawing this detailed rewards a closer look, and a chest-front print lets the stone courses and hatched shadows read at conversation distance. The pale parchment ground and graphite lines carry across the shirt's natural light base, so the temple sits in the same quiet, contemplative tone as the original sheet.
