Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Temple Carnac, Egypt - unknown - T-Shirt

This graphite pencil study frames a shadowed doorway between two massive stone columns at the Temple of Karnak in Egypt.

Visual Elements & Composition

Pale parchment fills most of the sheet, with graphite grey carrying the drawing and a faint ochre stain warming the margins. Two columns built from thick, stacked drums stand at the left and right, lightly modelled with soft vertical and horizontal strokes. A heavy lintel spans between them, its underside shaded with fine parallel hatching. Beneath it, a passage recedes into darkness, flanked by a narrower pier and a rough block wall. The caption at the lower centre names the temple.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing concentrates on mass and weight. The lintel seems to press down on the doorway, and the eye is pulled back into the dark space beyond. Karnak was among the largest religious complexes of ancient Egypt, and its columned halls gave nineteenth-century European travellers a strong sense of scale. The sheet records that encounter with the size of the architecture. Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, an American artist born in Manlius, New York, made studies like this on location, and the captioned site identification ties the work to his travels and observation.

Wearing the Study Across the Chest

Architectural studies read best from a short distance, and a tee puts the drawing at exactly that range. The columns rise up the torso while the doorway settles at the centre of the chest, so the shadowed passage becomes the focal point of the shirt. Wherever you stand, the print keeps the same solemn balance of stone and shadow.
