Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Carnac, Egypt - unknown - T-Shirt

A pencil study of a standing column beside a heap of fallen stone, dated February 1844 at Carnac, Egypt.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing sets one upright column on the left against a tumble of masonry on the right. The column keeps its broad, flat abacus and carved capital, with fine vertical banding running down the drum. Thick architrave blocks and stacked courses build the ruin on the right, with one broken block projecting from the top. In the foreground, large angular slabs cut diagonally across the sheet, shaded with dense parallel hatching. Pale parchment cream dominates, with graphite and grey tones carrying the stone. The lower left bears the initials M.K.K., and the lower right reads "Carnac, Feb 2 '44."

Meaning & Symbolism

The sheet contrasts an upright column still in place with masonry brought down, so it reads as a study of ruin and of how architecture comes apart. Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born in Manlius, New York, was an American painter, and this dated sheet shows his habit of close architectural observation. Rather than a picturesque view, he concentrates on the weight, joints and block edges of the stone, recording the physical facts of a site.

Built Around the Tee

Because the drawing is a close study of stone, the composition works best when seen up near the eye, where the hatching and block edges come through clearly. On this tee, the column and the diagonal slabs sit across the chest, so the fallen blocks read as a heavy, still weight at the front of the wearer.
