Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Carnac - unknown - T-Shirt

A pencil sketch of a tall obelisk rising above fallen blocks and broken walls at Carnac, dated February 1844, drawn by American painter Miner Kilbourne Kellogg from direct observation.

Visual Elements & Composition

The obelisk stands near the centre of the sheet, its pointed top breaking the skyline, with a smaller pointed form just beyond a low wall to its left. Stacked masonry forms broken walls on either side, one rising in stepped courses at the right, while loose stones and rubble crowd the foreground and a rocky mass fills the left edge. The graphite is light and linear. Blocks are outlined and modelled with restrained shading, and the small caption in the lower left reads "Carnac" with its February date.

Meaning & Symbolism

Carnac was the name then commonly used for the Karnak temple complex at Luxor, one of the major religious sites of ancient Egypt, and obelisks were among its defining monuments. Kellogg's sketch sets a standing shaft among fallen and reassembled masonry, a pairing of monumental survival and broken architecture that drew travellers and artists to such sites throughout the nineteenth century. The spare line and careful attention to stone show a focus on the structure and wear of ancient architecture rather than an idealised view.

Made for the Wearer Who Looks Closely

Drawings like this reward a slow read, and a chest print gives the sketch room to be seen at conversation distance. The obelisk sits at the centre of the composition, so it lands where the eye settles first, with the rubble and broken walls framing it on either side. Wear it when you want the quiet, weathered stillness of the original page in front of you.
