Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Mt. Olympus - unknown - T-Shirt

A pencil study on warm parchment pairs a turbaned figure in profile with a broad tree, a low rounded hut and softly hatched ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built from a loose group of sketches rather than one finished scene. A standing man stands at the left in side profile, wrapped in a turban, wearing a loose jacket and full trousers, his hands held together at his waist. A broad, branching tree fills the centre, flanked by lighter foliage, while a low hut sits in the upper middle. Graphite grey and dark pencil tones describe the trunks and shadowed ground, and a few sprigs of leaves appear at the upper right edge. Handwritten marginal notes name the figure and the hut, and the drawing is dated July 16, 1845.

Meaning & Symbolism

The pairing of a single figure with architecture and vegetation reflects how travel sketchbooks recorded people and places encountered on a journey. The turban and loose dress record regional costume, so the drawing works as an ethnographic note as well as a landscape study. The title refers to Mount Olympus, the mountain associated in antiquity with the gods of Greece. Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born in Manlius, New York, worked in watercolour, oil and pencil on his journeys through the Near East in the 1840s. Studies like this one were the groundwork for his finished paintings, showing how he gathered figures, buildings and foliage.

On the T-Shirt

A sketchbook drawing is built from small, observed moments, and on a tee it reads as a single figure set in an open space across the chest. The quiet pencil lines and soft parchment tones give the print a calm, understated presence that suits everyday wear.
