Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Mt. Sinai - unknown - T-Shirt

This pencil landscape shows a wide, barren desert valley bounded by fractured granite ridges, drawn with the quiet precision of an on-the-spot sketch.

Visual Elements & Composition

Graphite greys and sand beige dominate the image, sitting on a warm tan ground that gives the paper a sun-worn look. Rugged ridges rise along the left and form a steep wall, while a rounded peak with a sharp crest stands near the centre. A lower range closes the view on the right. Light pencil strokes and small clusters of rock make up the foreground, and a band of hatched ground runs along the bottom edge. The sky is left blank, so the eye settles on the rock. Lettering along the lower edge reads "Encampment of the Israelites near Mt Sinai," naming the place directly.

Meaning & Symbolism

The inscription ties the valley to the biblical account of the Israelites' wanderings after the Exodus, and the peak is identified as Jebel Musa, the mountain traditionally associated with Sinai. Nineteenth-century travellers and artists sought out such scriptural places and recorded them as landscapes, so the drawing carries both a religious setting and a document of the terrain. The unpopulated view stresses the scale of the mountains and the emptiness of the desert, the setting the narrative itself describes. Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, an American painter born in Manlius, New York, made this sketch during his travels in the Near East, where the record of a place was valued as much as the finished picture.

Made for the Tee

A landscape like this rewards a close look, and a tee lets the viewer take it in at chest height and in motion, the scene moving with the body as the wearer walks. The open sky and quiet foreground keep the composition calm across the front of the shirt, so the ridges and the lettering read clearly from a distance and up close alike.
