Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Oak Tree on Mt. Sinai - unknown - T-Shirt

A single slender tree stands alone on a rocky mountainside in this graphite pencil drawing of Mount Sinai by Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, a nineteenth-century American painter born in Manlius, New York.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is drawn in graphite on warm buff paper, and the tall tree dominates the vertical composition, its pointed crown tapering toward an empty sky. Its trunk is thin and mostly bare, thickening only where the foliage gathers near the top. A low, flat-roofed building sits to the left among rough ground, while steep, broken cliffs on the right step down toward the foreground in dense hatching. The handwritten line along the bottom margin, "The only tree on Mt. Sinai," anchors the scene in its place.

Meaning & Symbolism

Mount Sinai is central to the biblical account of Moses receiving the law, and the reference to the convent of Elijah places the scene within a religious setting. Against bare rock and a lonely building, the isolated tree reads as an emblem of endurance in an austere landscape. Kellogg turns a topographical view into a quiet meditation on solitude and survival. The drawing belongs to his travel sketches, recorded from direct observation rather than imagination.

Carried on the Tee

A tall tree on a long, narrow sheet suits the front of a shirt, where the eye moves from the crown down the trunk to the rocks below. The design sits close to the body, so the solitary figure stays in view as you move through the day. The quiet tone of the drawing carries onto the chest as a simple, restrained image.
