Visual Elements & Composition

Graphite does nearly all the work here. Soft grey shading models flat-roofed houses with arched openings, niches and projecting parapets, stacked one above another across the hillside. The paper is a pale cream, and the walls read as a single rounded mass drawn as one piece. At the foot of the slope, small figures stand in open ground, one balancing a jar or load on her head. A few seated figures rest on a terrace near the top. A slender mast and rigging rise at the right edge, and a loosely hatched strip of riverbank runs along the bottom. The inscription reads Town of Atfi on the Nile and is dated 1843.

Miner Kilbourne Kellogg was an American painter born in Manlius, New York, who worked in the nineteenth century. This sheet records a town he saw during his travels on the Nile, and it belongs to a body of quick pencil studies made from direct observation.
