Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Nanfio - 1843 - T-Shirt

This is a pencil study of three rocky headlands seen from the water, with one steep promontory drawn large in the foreground.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built from separate studies on one page. At upper left, a rocky outcrop with two jagged summits rests on a horizontal waterline. At upper right, a longer, undulating ridge runs off toward the edge. The lower study dominates: a steep promontory with vertical, hatched rock faces and several pinnacles along its crest, rising from the sea. The palette is pale parchment, pencil grey and dark graphite, and the lettering beneath each view names the place. The lower caption reads "Promontory of Nauplia 2nd view" and carries the date 23 Dec 43.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing records a coastline from several angles, a method travellers and surveyors relied on to fix the form of a landmark for later reference. The precise hatching and attention to the cliff faces put geology ahead of scenic effect. Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, an American painter born in Manlius, New York, made studies like this on his journeys through the Mediterranean and the Near East in the 1840s. Sketches captioned and dated on the spot formed his travel record and show the working method behind his finished landscapes.

Reading the Study Up Close

Rendered in graphite, this sheet rewards close attention. The hatched rock faces and the jagged crest of the lower promontory read as line work, and the three views sit side by side the way they did on the original page. Printed on a tee, the composition keeps that same arrangement: a dominant cliff, quieter headlands beside it, and the dated caption as the final detail for the eye to find.
