Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Landscapes - 1843 - T-Shirt

A graphite panorama of stacked horizontal bands, each recording the silhouette of a distant island coastline in December 1843.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built from stacked strips, one above another, each holding a different skyline. Upper bands show low, broken ridges with light hatching at their bases. The middle band lifts to a few sharper peaks on the right, and the lower bands give way to a heavier mountain mass with cross-hatched slopes and a long, undulating ridge along the foot. Pale parchment dominates, with pencil grey and charcoal carrying the lines. Handwritten place names sit beside the bands, among them Racha, Steinosa, Amorgos (noted as lying on the left) and Nio, with the date "22d Dec. 43" at the bottom.

Meaning & Symbolism

Each band fixes the profile of one coast as it appeared from the deck of a ship, so the sequence of strips records a single passage through the Aegean. Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, an American painter born in Manlius, New York, worked in the Mediterranean during the 1840s, and drawings like this were his working record. The labelled, measured method shows a traveller logging land in order, the kind of sketch an artist would later return to when composing finished views. The drawing is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection.

Wearing the Journey

A tee carries the design across the chest, so the bands stack vertically from shoulder to hem, the way the coastlines followed one another across the sheet. The labels sit where the eye lands first, which makes the piece read as a list of places rather than a single picture. Wear it as a travel record: a sequence of islands, each one dated and fixed in place.
