Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Monte...() - 1843 - T-Shirt

This is a dusky pencil landscape of a hilltop settlement at evening, with a church bell tower standing at the crest.

Visual Elements & Composition

A hill rises in a long curve across the lower half of the sheet, and the shading is built from dense, broad strokes. Sky and slope blend into one tonal field of warm sepia over pale cream, so the silhouette does the work that outline would do elsewhere. A domed bell tower and a small cross sit at the top of the ridge, with a low building beside them. Tall cypresses line the slope on the left, a ruined tower with a broken top stands in the trees above, and a slender spire rises on the right. A faint crescent moon hangs in the pale band of sky. The inscription at the lower left begins "Monte" and is dated September 11, 1843.

Meaning & Symbolism

The church tower, the ruin and the cypresses together describe a place that has been settled for a long time and carries its history in its stones. Cypresses and bell towers are familiar features of Italian hill towns, and the drawing reads as a landscape of memory more than a survey of buildings. Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, an American painter born in Manlius, New York, made the original sheet in September 1843 during his travels. Its tonal approach differs from the crisp outline studies he made on the same trip. He used evening landscapes like this one to study light and silhouette, and those studies shaped the atmospheric effects in his finished paintings. The original drawing is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

Because the drawing is built from soft, overlapping tone rather than hard lines, the image reads best at a distance, when the hill, the moon and the tower come forward as one dusk scene. Across the chest, the hilltop sits at the center of the view, with the sky opening above it and the cypresses falling away toward the sleeves. Wearing it, you carry a quiet evening landscape with you.
