Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Studies-Landscape and Portrait - n.d. - T-Shirt

A pencil study sheet that gathers four bearded heads in hooded cloaks beside a towering rocky cliff, all worked out on a single page.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is divided into separate panels, each holding its own study. Pale cream paper carries nearly all of the surface, with graphite grey lines doing the work. The upper left shows a bearded man half turned and looking down beneath a brimmed cap. The upper centre presents a frontal bust in a wrapped turban, built from light, hatched shading. Lower left repeats a bowed head in a fur-trimmed cap. At the lower right, a tall cliff rises in vertical bands of dense hatching, while small sketched objects sit at the upper right. Handwritten pencil notes appear in several places among the drawings.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sheet joins portrait and landscape, two subjects a painter would normally study apart. The repeated heads, with their distinctive headwear and drapery, record costume and character. The cliff records the structure of stone and the way light moves across a vertical face. Placing figure and terrain on one page shows how each was tested and compared before it entered a finished composition. Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born in Manlius, New York, drew this working method across his output, and this mixed sheet preserves the observations his larger pictures were built from.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A sheet of studies rewards a slow look, and a tee puts that look at chest height, where the eye settles in close conversation. The panels read as separate moments on one surface, so the shirt carries a set of portraits and a landscape together, the way the artist first kept them on paper.
