Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Tomb of Helena, Jerusalem - unknown - T-Shirt

A graphite study of the rock-cut Tomb of Helena in Jerusalem, drawn on site by Miner Kilbourne Kellogg and dated March 1844.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built from soft grey graphite on warm parchment-toned paper, and the tomb's facade fills the centre. A deep band of shadow cuts through the stone, and above it runs a horizontal strip of carved scrolling ornament beneath a projecting ledge. To the left, a stepped mass of rock is layered with fine crosshatching, giving the stone weight and depth. A small seated figure rests near the base of the cutting, and a tall palm tree rises along the right edge. The inscription "Tomb of Helena. Jerusalem" sits in the lower right, with "Mch 24. 1844" in the lower left.

Meaning & Symbolism

The monument is traditionally linked to Helena of Adiabene, a first-century queen who converted to Judaism and settled in Jerusalem. Its carved chambers and ornamented facade drew travellers throughout the nineteenth century, and Kellogg's heavy shadow and sculpted band present the tomb as a relic of ancient Jerusalem. Kellogg, born in Manlius, New York, was an American painter who travelled in the Near East in the 1840s. This sheet is one of his on-site studies from that journey, and its handwritten inscriptions record both the subject and the date.

Carried Onto the T-Shirt

A sketch this detailed rewards a close look, and the heavy shadows and carved band read clearly at chest height. The palm and the seated figure sit at the edges of the design, so the tomb stays the focal point when the shirt is worn. The handwritten inscriptions give the wearer a dated record of the place, carried from the page onto cotton.
