Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Valley of Kings, Thebes - unknown - T-Shirt

A pencil study of towering rock cliffs, drawn with close hatching that turns raw stone into a mass of light and shadow.

Visual Elements & Composition

Pale paper fills most of the sheet, and the graphite grey of the hatched stone rises through the left and centre. Vertical and diagonal strokes build the faces of the cliff, while darker recesses cut between sunlit planes. A narrow sloping ledge enters from the lower right and leads the eye into the rock. The upper right is left nearly blank, which gives the cliffs room to dominate. A faint inscription sits at the lower left, and the number "No. 4" marks the upper right corner.

Meaning & Symbolism

The catalogue title places the scene in the Valley of the Kings at Thebes, on the west bank of the Nile, where New Kingdom rulers cut their tombs into steep desert rock. Kellogg drew the cliff as a rising mass of stone, and the hollows he shaded recall why these sites were chosen: remote, high and hard to reach. The sheet concentrates on geology and place rather than on any single monument. It belongs to Kellogg's field-study work, an American painter born in Manlius, New York, who recorded the landscapes he met on his travels, and its attention rests on structure, light and texture.

On the T-Shirt

A tall, vertical cliff face suits the front of a tee, where the rock can rise across the chest and the open paper at the upper right sits quietly against the neckline. The ledge running in from the lower side follows the natural line of the body, so the composition reads as you move. Wear it as a quiet study of stone and light, shaped by the hand of the artist who drew it.
