Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Vesuvius - unknown - T-Shirt

A broad watercolour panorama of Vesuvius rising above a calm bay, with a pale plume of smoke drifting from its summit.

Visual Elements & Composition

The mountain dominates the sheet, its two dark, rounded peaks set against a sky that moves from soft grey to rose and ochre near the horizon. A row of white buildings follows the shoreline at the volcano's base, and low hills extend to the right. The water is laid in flat blue-grey washes, which keep the bay quiet and open. A date, 1841, is inscribed at the lower left.

Meaning & Symbolism

Vesuvius has drawn travellers since the eruption of 79 CE that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum. Its active summit made it a symbol of both danger and grandeur, and views of the mountain from the water became a standard part of the Grand Tour. Kellogg, the American painter born in Manlius, New York, worked in watercolour and pencil on travel subjects. This view belongs to his finished landscapes made from observation abroad, where atmosphere and the sweep of the bay matter as much as the volcano itself. The original is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection.

Shaped for the Front of a Tee

A panorama like this reads best at a distance, the way a viewer would take in the bay from a boat. On a tee, the mountain's silhouette sits in the centre of the chest, and the smoke plume and pale evening sky give the shirt its light and its quiet mood. Wearing it puts the eruption-shadowed shoreline of Naples across your own shoulders, a scene that has held the eye for nearly two centuries.
