Olin Levi Warner, born Suffield, CT - Rainy Day - 1866 - T-Shirt

A single figure walks through diagonal rain in this pencil and wash sketch, balancing a load on her head as she moves toward the left of the sheet.

Visual Elements & Composition

The palette is restrained, built almost entirely from sepia and pale brown with touches of grey. The figure stands in profile and dominates the centre of the page, her body built from broken, scribbled grey pencil lines. A loose garment falls in soft folds to the ankles, while the feet are only lightly indicated against a shadowed ground. Diagonal strokes of rain cross the upper and right portions of the sheet, and the paper carries stains, spots and discoloured patches. The word Rainy sits in the lower left corner, with a date at upper right.

Meaning & Symbolism

Warner made the drawing as a study of weather and movement rather than a finished narrative. Placing a laden figure in the rain focuses attention on the bent, steady posture of the body and the way falling water changes the scene. The subject is an everyday street figure, drawn from observation in the manner of mid-nineteenth-century genre drawing. Olin Levi Warner (1844–1896), born in Suffield, Connecticut, became an American sculptor and medallist known for portrait busts, medallions and figure sculpture. This sheet dates from the early part of his career, and studies like it formed the groundwork for his sculpted figures. The original is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee puts the figure in motion across the chest, with the rain falling diagonally over the shoulders and sleeves as the wearer moves. The loose, draped garment and the stained paper translate into a quiet, weathered surface that reads well at a conversation's distance. The composition is built around one steady walking figure, so the drawing stays calm and focused on the body in the weather.
