Paul Adolphe Rajon, 1843 - 1888 - Olin Levi Warner - 1888 - T-Shirt

A pencil portrait of the American sculptor Olin Levi Warner, drawn by the French etcher Paul Adolphe Rajon in 1888, shows the sitter turned three-quarter to the right with a steady, unhurried gaze.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built almost entirely from graphite grey and dark brown on a tan sheet. The head is the most fully worked area, its form modelled through fine hatching and soft shading around a closely cropped head of hair and a full beard. The eyes sit beneath heavy brows and look slightly outward. The shoulders dissolve into loose, directional strokes that fade toward the edges, and the background is left as a plain tone. A short handwritten inscription runs down the right-hand side of the sheet, and the date 1888 is part of that writing.

Meaning & Symbolism

Portraits of artists by fellow artists were a common form of exchange in the nineteenth century, recording a friendship or working association between makers. Warner (1844-1896) was known for his portrait busts and relief medallions, and Rajon (1843-1888) for his portrait etchings and reproductive prints after Rembrandt and Rubens. The unidealised treatment of the face, with its attention to expression and the structure of the head, reflects a drawing made as a personal record rather than a public image. Dated 1888, it stands in the final year of Rajon's life, a document of one maker's command of tone and line.

Designed for the Wearer

This is a sober, reflective study of a face, and on a tee it reads at close range, where the fine hatching and the quiet tan ground are seen up close as the wearer moves. The drawing's restraint suits a shirt worn in everyday settings, and its vintage character carries across the chest without competing with the wearer.
