Paolo de Matteis, Italian, born Piano - Drawing - unknown - T-Shirt

A red chalk study of a male nude seen from behind, one arm raised to the head and his weight set on one leg, drawn on a buff-toned sheet.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is dominated by warm parchment tones, with the red chalk figure occupying the centre of a tall rectangular format. White highlights lift the shoulders, the back and the calves, while soft hatching models the shoulder blades and buttocks. The raised right arm bends toward the back of the head, the left arm hangs loose, and the bare foot is firmly drawn at the lower left. The outline is built from repeated strokes, so the musculature reads through the line rather than through solid shading.

Meaning & Symbolism

The pose is an academic study of the body in action. Seventeenth and eighteenth century artists drew figures like this from life or from observation to master anatomy and movement, then carried those lessons into larger religious, mythological and decorative works. The turned torso and working limbs show the body as one connected unit, a principle at the heart of figure teaching in the Italian academies. The drawing is by Paolo de Matteis (1662-1728), born in Piano in the Cilento region of southern Italy, who worked mainly in Naples and later in Rome after training under Luca Giordano. His fluent, energetic line reflects the Neapolitan Baroque.

Studio Practice, Worn Close

This is a study meant to be read at close range, where the strokes and hatching carry the form. Printed across a tee, the figure keeps that intimate scale and the quiet, contemplative mood of the original sheet, with its warm parchment ground and red chalk line brought onto the body and seen up close as you wear it.
