Peter Maverick, born New York City - Vertrouwt Book Plate - ca. 1820 - T-Shirt

This is a formal early nineteenth-century book plate engraved by Peter Maverick, built around a single name set within a disciplined, ornamental frame.

Visual Elements & Composition

The design is organised around the word Vertrouwt, which sits at the centre of the plate and carries the most visual weight. Engraved linework and carefully set typography form a symmetrical structure, with the lettering and border working together as one controlled arrangement. Nothing is decorative for its own sake; every line serves the legibility of the name.

Meaning & Symbolism

Book plates, or ex libris, were pasted inside the covers of personal books to mark ownership and encourage their return. Vertrouwt is Dutch for "trusted" or "confided," so the plate doubles as a statement of personal reliability and a nod to the Dutch traditions that shaped colonial New York. Maverick was a prominent New York engraver and lithographer, part of a prolific family of printmakers who helped build the commercial base of American graphic arts. This piece reflects the precision and formality that defined that work.

Why It Works on a Tee

A book plate was designed to be read up close, the way a reader would hold a small printed label in hand. Printed across the chest, the name and its frame keep that intimate, text-first character, and the design reads as a deliberate piece of typography rather than a loud graphic. The tee gives this historic engraving a wearable form while keeping its focus on the name it was made to announce.
