Robert Henri, born Cincinnati, OH - Untitled (nude) - ca. 1915-1920 - T-Shirt

This is a charcoal study of a seated figure with her head bowed under a wrapped headscarf, set against heavy drapery.

Visual Elements & Composition

Cream paper dominates the sheet, with charcoal black and mid grey doing the work of the drawing. The figure sits in the centre of a tall, vertical field, and vertical folds of dark drapery fill the upper part of the sheet behind her. One arm rests along a support at left while the other hangs toward the lower foreground, so the body is framed by repeated verticals. Soft tonal shading models the shoulders, breast and torso, and the lower body dissolves into loose, open hatching. Wide blank margins around the sheet keep the eye on the figure.

Meaning & Symbolism

The lowered head and enclosing curtain give the study a quiet, withdrawn mood. The headscarf and drapery were studio props, used to frame the sitter and vary the setting, which was a common arrangement in figure drawing of the period. The emphasis is on the massing of light and shadow rather than finished anatomy, so the sheet works as an exercise in tone and form. Robert Henri (1865-1929), born in Cincinnati, was an American painter and teacher, a leader of the Ashcan School, and an advocate of drawing from the living model. He made many figure studies in charcoal and crayon, and this untitled drawing is dated to about 1915-1920.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A figure study is built from tone rather than outline, so the drawing reads best at chest scale, where the shading across the shoulders and torso can be seen at a glance. The printed image sits on the front of the shirt as a single composed sheet, with the drapery framing the wearer's torso the way the original mount frames the paper.
