Robert Henri, born Cincinnati, OH - Seated Woman - 1924 - T-Shirt

A loose charcoal study of a woman seated in a chair, her head turned to one side and her hands resting in her lap, drawn in 1924 by Robert Henri.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is a vertical rectangle of pale cream paper, and the figure occupies most of it. Charcoal blacks and mid greys do the work: heavy, hatched strokes suggest the chair at left, while soft, sweeping lines describe a loose wrapped garment with a deep neckline. Her dark hair is gathered high at the back of the head, and the face is held to only a few marks. The background is left blank, so the dark hair and the pale garment carry the contrast, and the eye settles on the posture.

Meaning & Symbolism

Figure studies like this one were how painters worked out the structure of the body and the play of light and shadow. Henri, born in Cincinnati in 1865 and a leading member of the Ashcan School, taught his students to draw from life with speed and conviction, and he filled his career with charcoal and crayon studies of this kind. Dated 1924, late in his working life, the sheet shows a sitter at rest, presented directly and without sentiment.

Rest, Drawn Quickly

A seated figure with relaxed hands suits a shirt, because the image reads as a single calm moment rather than a scene that needs to be scanned. The drawing is at its strongest up close, where the economy of each line becomes visible, and the tee's crew neckline frames the figure's own deep neckline in the way Henri's garment falls. Worn, the drawing keeps the quiet, self-contained mood of the original sheet.
