Solimena - Drawing - unknown - T-Shirt

This pencil and grey wash drawing shows four winged putti arranged within a shaped panel, a study from the workshop of the Neapolitan Baroque painter Francesco Solimena.

Visual Elements & Composition

The panel has a straight upper edge and a scalloped lower edge, and the figures move around it in a spiral. At the left, one putto is foreshortened on a sharp diagonal, legs bent and one arm raised. A smaller child reaches upward from the upper centre, while a plump putto at centre right holds a bundle of slender stems. A fourth figure at the right turns toward the viewer. Soft clouds appear as light shading at the lower left and right. The palette is restrained: cream parchment, pencil grey, and a pale grey wash, with cross-hatched shadow modelling the bodies.

Meaning & Symbolism

Putti like these fill Baroque ceilings and wall schemes, where they carry garlands and emblems and mark the heavenly sphere above the viewer. The scalloped edge and turning figures show a design meant to sit within a larger painted composition, such as a cartouche or lunette. Solimena (1657-1747) was the leading painter of the Neapolitan Baroque and drew studies like this to settle poses, foreshortening and spatial relationships before committing a scheme to plaster or canvas. Wearing the Cherubs

A tee carries the artwork at chest height, so the panel reads as a single framed scene facing the wearer. The scalloped lower edge follows the line of the shirt's body, and the figures turn outward toward anyone who looks at you.
