Unidentified - Figurative Abstraction - ca. 1930-1938 - T-Shirt

A bold black ink and charcoal drawing of a figure broken into angular planes, with a profile head at upper left and a monogram at lower right.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is almost entirely black line and shadow on cream paper, framed by a heavy black border. A profile head with an almond-shaped eye sits at upper left, its outline thickened into one sweeping contour. Below and to the right, a curved mass reads as shoulder, arm and hand, marked by fine parallel hatching and wavy strokes. Hatched fields and grid-like cross-hatching fill the corners and the lower band, and a monogram sits in the lower right corner. The paper's light tone does much of the work, leaving the figure to stand out in stark contrast.

Meaning & Symbolism

The figure is reduced to large interlocking shapes, so head, torso and limbs read as masses of tone rather than anatomy. That compression gives the image its intensity: the figure seems to turn or press forward within the frame, and its emotional weight rests on rhythm, contrast and the hard edge of line. The record dates the sheet to ca. 1930-1938 and names no artist beyond the monogram. The handling belongs to the wider Expressionist current in German and central European drawing, where artists borrowed the blunt, planar forms of the woodcut to express feeling rather than surface detail.

Bringing the Drawing onto a Tee

A tee is worn close to the body, so the figure's bold outline and hatched shadows travel with the wearer's shoulders and chest, where the profile head and angular planes stay in view as you move. The stark black-and-cream scheme translates directly to a single-colour print on a cream-toned shirt, keeping the graphic punch of the original ink drawing.
