University of Hertfordshire Coat of Arms T-Shirt Design
This t-shirt showcases the full and official Coat of Arms (Achievement of Arms) of the University of Hertfordshire, a striking emblem rich in symbolism and history.
The Shield
The central element is the shield, dominated by a regal purple background (Purpure), a color associated with wisdom and dignity. Across the shield, a unique "H" shape is formed by a silver (Argent) fess conjoined to two flaunches, a direct nod to the university's origins as Hatfield Polytechnic. Above, the constellation Perseus is represented by six gold stars (mullets), acknowledging the university’s dedication to science and its links to computer science, with Algol, a binary star, represented. At the base, a golden (Gold) oak tree, couped (cut off) and fructed (bearing fruit), represents strength, history and rootedness. This element is taken from the former Hatfield Rural District's Coat of Arms.
The Crest
Above the shield, the crest features a phoenix, depicted in black (Sable) and rising from a golden (Or) astral crown, engulfed in flames (proper). This powerful image embodies renewal, transformation, and the university's evolution from its roots in technical education. The phoenix wears a wreath of green laurel (Vert), representing victory.
The Supporters
On either side of the shield stand two red harts (Gules), with golden antlers and hooves (attired and unguled Or). They are each adorned with a ribbon (per fess Purpure and Sable) from which hangs a gold embattled annulet, pierced by a silver (Argent) quill, symbols of academic knowledge and local benefactors. The harts rest their interior hind hoof on a covered cup, representing the generous land donation of A.S. Butler. The compartment is designed with water (Argent and Azure) and grassy mounts.
Design's Rich Tapestry
Overall, the design is a testament to the university’s heritage, its dedication to knowledge, and its location. The careful combination of colors, shapes, and symbolic elements creates a compelling visual representation of the University of Hertfordshire’s values and its enduring legacy.
