unknown - A Sepulchral Monument of Henry Cardinal York (1725-1807) and Charles Edward - ca. 1818 - T-Shirt

This grey wash drawing presents a Neoclassical tomb set within an arched niche, with two robed figures standing above a sarcophagus that holds a mourning figure.

Visual Elements & Composition

Grey ink wash dominates the sheet, with pale stone tones and touches of dark umber and ivory giving the architecture its depth. A round-arched niche frames the whole monument. Pilasters on either side carry relief trophies of arms and armour, and at the centre a crowned shield hangs above a drawn curtain. Beneath it, two figures stand behind a ledge: the older wears a cardinal's cape and extends one arm, while the younger stands beside him. Below, a sarcophagus carries reliefs and a seated nude figure leaning against its side, with drapery falling across the base of the tomb.

Meaning & Symbolism

The monument commemorates the last Stuart line in exile, pairing Henry Benedict Stuart, Cardinal of York, with his elder brother Charles Edward Stuart, who led the Jacobite rising of 1745. The crown and shield refer to the royal arms the family claimed, and the armour in the pilasters recalls their military and dynastic history. The seated figure supplies the mourning presence typical of Neoclassical memorials, tying the portraits to grief and remembrance. The drawing is dated to about 1818 and relates to the Stuart monument in St Peter's Basilica in Rome, designed by Antonio Canova and completed in 1819. It records a draughtsman planning the setting before the tomb was carved.

Designed for the Tee

A drawing like this rewards a close look, and the front of a tee brings it within easy reach. The architectural framing and soft tonal shifts read clearly at arm's length, so the niche, the two figures and the shield come through as one composed scene. The grey palette sits quietly with everyday clothing, and the full monument stays centred on the chest where it is seen first.
