unknown - Design for a Sepulchral Monument for Three Brothers - 1590–1610 - T-Shirt

This pen, ink and wash design sets out a tall tomb monument of three standing figures in arched niches, framed by banded columns and a scrolled pediment.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built as a symmetrical elevation, with the architecture stacked in tiers from a plain tomb block at the base to a tiered finial at the top. Cream paper dominates the composition, with ochre gold and red banding on the columns dividing the bays. A central armoured figure holding a sword stands between two figures in long cloaks, and a shield cartouche crowns the structure. Pale blue washes and pink marbling add quiet colour to the plinth, where two putti support a draped cartouche and a fleur-de-lis appears on a dark panel.

Meaning & Symbolism

Funerary architecture of this kind commemorated the dead through heroic portraiture and family display. The armoured central figure stands for martial service and the honour of the household, while the tall architecture lifts that memory toward an ideal of lasting status. The putti, the drape and the fleur-de-lis, a long-standing emblem of French royal and noble heraldry, carry the traditional language of grief, continuity and rank. The catalogue title names the monument as a memorial for three brothers, and the three figures give the structure its meaning. The sheet reflects the balanced order and careful wash rendering of presentation drawings from the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, when designs like this were shown to patrons before a monument was carved.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

Printed across the chest, this elevation reads as a single, centred structure, so the tiers of niches and columns stack naturally down the front of the shirt. The three figures sit close to the body, and the eye moves from the finial at the top of the chest down through the central armoured figure to the putti and plinth at the hem. Wearing the design puts a patron's-eye view of a memorial onto everyday clothing.
