This grey-wash design sets out a complete funerary monument, with a robed sovereign standing in an arched niche above a tomb crowded with the emblems of rule.

Visual Elements & Composition

Pale stone grey dominates the sheet, warmed by taupe and dark umber shading and set on a cream ground. Corinthian columns rise on tall pedestals to frame the scene, with carved winged putti in the panels at either side. The arrangement is strictly symmetrical. At its centre, a standing figure in a long wig and flowing robes gestures from a pedestal within the arched niche. Below and to the left, a kneeling churchman turns toward him, and at the right an armed figure in a cloak leans on a block. A small panel above the niche is left blank.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sarcophagus gathers a crown, a sceptre and a sword in one place, so authority is shown as the subject of the whole monument. Two lions crouch at the base, a long-standing emblem of royal protection. The contrast between the standing sovereign, the kneeling churchman and the armed companion speaks to the range of duties and loyalties owed in commemorating the dead. The design belongs to the late eighteenth-century tradition of presentation drawings, shown to patrons as finished architectural and sculptural schemes, and it commemorates the last three Stuarts.
