A watercolour still life shows a rounded woven basket heaped with carnations, roses, anemones and forget-me-nots, set on a grassy mound against a pale ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

Cream paper fills most of the frame, so the flowers read as a dense, glowing mass rising from the basket. Leaf green spreads outward through the stems and foliage, while rose pink and carnation red carry the warmest notes. Two red-and-white striped carnations sit at the centre of the group, with a large deep pink rose-like bloom to the right and a lilac anemone with a blue centre in front of the basket. Golden rosettes, pale blue forget-me-nots and a purple tulip fill the gaps, and basket brown anchors the bottom edge. Each flower is finished separately, with crisp edges between forms.

Meaning & Symbolism

This arrangement follows the long European still-life tradition of gathering blooms that flower in different seasons into one display. That gathering expresses abundance and beauty, and because cut flowers fade, it also carries the familiar reminder of the transience of life. Flower painting of the ca. 1800–1830 period was widely practised as ornamental work, and the artist of this sheet is recorded as unknown.
