unknown - Basket of Blossoms and Leaves with Pomegranates on Earth - ca. 1800–1830 - T-Shirt

A ribbed basket overflows with pomegranates, one split open to show its seeds, set among red blooms and broad green leaves on a grassy mound.

Visual Elements & Composition

The painting is built around a warm cluster of reds and greens on a cream ground. A dark, mottled pomegranate anchors the left side, while a second fruit at centre-right is cut open to reveal rows of pink-red seeds set in pale pith. Red blooms, some full and rounded and others tubular, rise above the basket and gather at the lower corners. Fine hatching models the glossy leaves and the fruit rinds, giving the sheet its careful, observed finish.

Meaning & Symbolism

The pomegranate, with its dense seeds beneath a tough rind, has long stood for abundance. In Christian art its split form was read as a sign of fruitfulness and renewal. Pairing fruit with flowers in one arrangement follows the European still-life tradition of plenty, and the woven basket presents the harvest as the work of a single garden. The watercolour dates from ca. 1800–1830, when artists prized finely observed ornamental natural history.

Wearing the Artwork

A tee is worn close to the body, so the basket and its split fruit read as the wearer moves, with the cut pomegranate placed where the eye lands first. The flowers at the lower edges frame the chest and sleeves, and the cream ground gives the red and green room to stand out in daylight or under a lamp.
