unknown - Cartouche with Saint - early to mid-18th - T-Shirt

A kneeling robed figure reaches toward a great shaded sphere while a host of heavenly figures gathers in the clouds above, all framed by a scrolled rococo cartouche.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built in dark pen and grey wash on blue-grey paper, and the paper tone itself serves as the middle value of the image. Pale blue-grey dominates the sheet, with cream highlights in the clouds and charcoal lines defining the figures and the frame. The composition moves upward. The kneeling man sits at the lower right, the shaded sphere sits at the lower left, and the clouds rise through the centre toward a cluster of seated and reclining figures at the upper left and upper right. A small architectural structure sits within a scroll at the top right, and a standing figure is tucked into the lower right scroll. The frame of scrolls and shells encloses the whole scene.

Meaning & Symbolism

The kneeling figure stands in direct relation to the vision above him, a pairing common in devotional imagery of the period. The large sphere beside him suggests cosmic order, setting the earthly figure within a larger structure of heaven and creation. The scrolling cartouche was a decorative device of the rococo, used to hold and present religious and allegorical subjects. This sheet dates to the early to mid-eighteenth century, when designers and printmakers used such compositions as models for frontispieces, title pages and ornamental panels. The original drawing belongs to the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

Worn Across the Chest

A tee carries its design at the centre of the body, so the cartouche reads as a single framed scene at eye level. The kneeling figure and the rising clouds draw the eye up toward the heavenly group, which sits well on the upper body when the shirt is worn. Viewers see the whole frame at once, and the scrollwork gives the print a clear edge that holds the scene together.
