unknown - Christmas Greeting - ca. 1865 - T-Shirt

This is a Victorian Christmas greeting from around 1865, built from pierced silver-toned paper lace, scrolled floral ornament and a scalloped card edge.

Visual Elements & Composition

The design is a rectangular card arranged around a symmetrical central motif, a scrolled floral ornament finished in silver grey. Flower sprigs with small rose-red blossoms sit on either side, balancing the composition left to right. Cream white and pale blue fill the ground, with diagonal stripes running through the pattern and the card's scalloped edges framing the whole piece. The rose red is a small accent, so the overall feel is cool, light and ordered.

Meaning & Symbolism

Cards like this grew out of the mid-nineteenth-century habit of sending holiday wishes to family and friends. As commercial printing and improved postal networks spread, greetings of this kind carried goodwill, domestic warmth and wishes for the new year. The lace-like pierced paper and floral scrollwork reflect the decorative taste of the Victorian era, when ornament signalled care and sentiment. The piece is an early example of the printed holiday ephemera that shaped later Christmas traditions.

Made for the Wearer

A greeting card is meant to be held and read up close, and this design works the same way on a tee. The central ornament sits at the chest, where the eye lands first, and the scrollwork and sprigs spread outward across the shirt. Wearing it puts a piece of nineteenth-century holiday sentiment in everyday view.
