unknown - Christmas Greeting - ca. 1890 - T-Shirt

This design reproduces a late Victorian Christmas greeting card from around 1890, built around a framed bouquet set on a warm taupe paper ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

Warm taupe fills nearly half the design and gives the whole composition its tone. A cream oval vignette sits at the centre, holding a bouquet of mixed flowers, with lily of the valley sprigs and pansies picked out in cornflower blue, leaf green, and lilac. An elongated teardrop tag hangs from a ribbon, and an embossed heart motif and a starburst ornament sit among the flowers as small accents. The layout is symmetrical and centred, so the oval draws the eye first and the tag and ornaments frame it.

Meaning & Symbolism

Victorian holiday cards like this one were a way of sending goodwill during the coldest months of the year. Flowers carried sentiment of affection and renewal, while the heart and starburst point to warmth and the spiritual side of the season. Christmas celebration grew into a major public custom during Queen Victoria's reign, and mass-produced chromolithography made cards like this one widely available. The image records the domestic and communal values of the period and the start of the commercial holiday season as it is known today.

On the Tee

A card designed to be held in the hand is here scaled up to the front of a shirt, so the oval vignette becomes the focal point seen across a room rather than up close. The bouquet and tag read clearly from a distance, and the cream centre stands out against the taupe ground the way the original card's did on the table.
