unknown - Design for a Brocade, Fragment - 1825–1850 - T-Shirt

This fragment of an 1825–1850 textile design shows a scatter of blue, red and green flower sprigs trailing across a warm brown ground, with fine gold tendrils running between them.

Visual Elements & Composition

Russet brown fills most of the surface, with cream, ochre yellow, slate blue and sage green carrying the florals. A large sprig at left fans out into feathery, blue-edged leaves capped by a red bloom. At upper right, a rounded, rose-like flower sits among green leaves, and at lower right a pointed, scalloped leaf cluster closes the arrangement. Thin gold vines with small leaves and buds link the sprigs. The torn upper and left edges and the fine network of cracks across the ground are part of the image.

Meaning & Symbolism

The design belongs to the naturalistic bouquet and trailing stem style, which dominated printed and woven furnishing fabrics in the first half of the nineteenth century. Its sprigs are spaced loosely, so the eye travels from bloom to bloom as if walking through a garden laid across the cloth. Fragments like this survive as trade samples, showing how a repeat pattern was planned and coloured for the furnishing market.

Made for the Wearer

A textile fragment is meant to be seen as a whole field of pattern, and a tee gives it that field. The sprigs sit across the chest and sleeves the way they sat across the cloth, so the garden reads as one continuous scene as you move. The brown ground and cool blues against warm reds keep the florals lively at every angle, and the tear at the edge of the original becomes part of the story you wear.
